ZTE Grand MEMO Hands on: Mammoth Phablet with Unique Features
Today we took a look at the ZTE Grand MEMO phablet at Mobile World Congress 2013
in Barcelona. Just like last year, ZTE had a wide variety of devices
presented at their booth. This time, the spotlight was taken by the
Grand MEMO, the new flagship device from ZTE. The Chinese company is
currently trying to win a bigger share of the mobile market, with a big
bet on the Android platforms.
They are trying to become a big name in the mobile world, creating some great devices at reasonable prices. The new device comes with features that might impress some, but not us, because we have the feeling this is just another phablet. Nonetheless, let’s have a look at the technical profile of the ZTE Grand Memo before jumping to hands-on pictures and videos.
Hands-on with ZTE Grand Memo
ZTE Grand MEMO: features and specifications
ZTE tried to make the Grand Memo special by adding unique features like power management system, security measures and Dolby Digital Sound. Still, we couldn’t take our eyes away from the plastic build, even if this keeps the weight down. It does have a monster processor inside, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800, which will give LTE powers to the phone. The model that we tested was using the older, S4 Pro which will be replaced in newer versions.Somebody will find this new size useful, though, especially gamers and movie lovers. The phone is big enough for you to take it with you, play games and see videos. So, if you want it for that matter, ZTE Grand Memo is a good choice.
- CPU: Quad-Core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor clocked at 1.7GHz that will be upgraded to the new Snapdragon 800 in a future version
- Screen: 5.7 inch display with a resolution of 1280×720 pixels
- Camera: 13 MP Rear camera that can shoot full HD video, 1MP front facing camera
- Memory: 2RAM and 16 GB of internal memory for storage
- Battery: 3200 mAh
- OS: Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean
- LTE 100/50Mbps
Another cool feature is the Dolby Digital Sound which puts out crisp and pretty loud sound and should be able to fill your room with music (unless you’re at the MWC and there’s a huge noise). Apart from this, we can add that the “new” Grand Memo will have LTE connectivity, just like its smaller brother, the Grand S LTE.
Although the Grand MEMO is a big smartphone and it has powerful hardware inside, ZTE has managed to keep it rather thin, at only 8.5mm. The back cover is plastic, which helps with the weight, but it doesn’t have a premium feel like other devices have. The Grand MEMO will be released in China in March, but unfortunately the European release is not yet set, but ZTE said it will come later this year. There is no word yet regarding the price of the device or the release for the US.
