Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 Nearly Confirmed: Questions & Observations

Image
After a wild CES 2013 event, the rumors, hearsay and speculation is back on. If Samsung didn’t impress you enough with the products and services they launched, then maybe the latest back-fence talk will make you turn your eyes towards the Korean behemoth. Yes, we’re talking about yet another little wonder of technology that might soon land on the market, “begging” you to buy it. Galaxy Note 8.0 seems to be the name of this possibly upcoming slate from the company residing in Samsung Town. If this is a rumor, why are we treating it seriously, someone could say. Well, for a number of reasons, but problably the biggest of them is the following. Samsung’s fierce battle with Apple I am not a fan of Apple, nor am I a fan of Samsung and frankly, I think it’s pretty dangerous these days to be loyal to a certain company, when there are soooo many products being launched, day and night. But I really like the battle between them, I love to see how they try to engage in technolog

DailyApp: Temple Run 2 (iOS): Another Good Run!

Image
It speaks volumes of the fame achieved by the game that for many people, Temple Run is pretty much synonymous with gaming on handsets and tablets. It has been almost a year and a half since Imangi studios (and Keith Shepherd and Natalia Luckyanova in particular) unleashed a game in which you controlled a character whose only job was to run. And run. And run. Why? Well, because you had stolen an idol from an ancient temple and were being pursued by vengeful monkeys. Weird? Well, the world did not think so. The game has been downloaded more than a hundred million times on iOS and Android and spawned a whole genre of gaming called “endless running,” not to mention dozens of clones. And now it has a sequel. Temple Run 2, to its credit, does not mess with the formula that made the first game a massive success. You still end up running endlessly. You are still guilty of having grabbed an idol. And you are still being chased by monkeys – all right, just a single, but giganti

Losing your smartphone is something that you all fear. It contains all your personal data, contacts, pictures and it has access to most of your online accounts. You can imagine how frustrating losing the device can be. Although there are more than one apps that allow you to completely wipe your phone or locate it, they operate over the Internet, as is the case with Lookout Mobile and Carbonite. AirDroid 2 is the app that will allow you to find your phone via the GSM network, thus making it harder for someone to conceal the device, even when the Internet connectivity has been disabled . The latest version of the app allowed users to control their phones from any browser, and with the latest upgrade of the app, it can be used as a great security measure. AirDroid 2 brings your phone to your browser The app was in beta testing until recently, and although the app is not yet available on the Play Store, you can still download and install it on your smartphone. Facebook for iPhone Now Allows Free Calling for Users in USA

Image
Facebook has decided to follow the steps of Skype and introduced a great new feature for iPhone owners within US. In order to gather even more percentages out of the whole Internet, Facebook has implemented a free-calling feature into the iOS Messaging application, which will allow owners to easily make calls from within the system. The new Facebook calling feature, available at the moment only for US-based iPhone owners, relies on the classic VoIP concept of delivering the message. The system works pretty neat and it takes users only a couple of steps to set up a live conversation. Facebook Free-Call System: A small piece of the puzzle In order to make a phone-call using the well-known social service and to avoid direct carrier charges, iPhone owners can simply launch the dedicated Facebook Messaging application, open a conversation with a partner, tap the “i” icon in the upper-right corner and go for a “”Free Call”. From point on, a pop-up message will arrive on t

Crazy Tech: HzO WaterBlock for Smartphones Demo at CES 2013

Image
CES 2013 was full of water-proofing and water-resisting technologies for gadgets. We saw at-least four different companies promising water-proofing solutions for smartphones, in addition to multitude of cases and gadget accessories. None of them amazed us more than the HzO WaterBlock technology which protects the gadgets from water, humidity and other liquids. For the uninitiated, HzO WaterBlock is like a transparent shield, which is a coating of bonded molecules that seals the internal components of electronic devices. As you can see in the video demo below, it works inside out, even with the back panel open and batteries exposed. The person at HzO booth carelessly immersed the coated Samsung Galaxy smartphone into a bowl of water, a bowl of Bud Light beer and even into a bowl of Powerade! They use a proprietary machine to coat their magic solution inside and outside the smartphone. This involves a lot of work and hence, they plan to work with the manufacturers di

Pebble Smart Watch Starts Shipping on Jan 23 [Gallery]

Image
The much awaited (and delayed) smart watch of the year 2012, Pebble , will finally be shipping to the Kickstarter backers starting January 23rd 2013. At its press conference at CES 2013 in Las Vegas, the Pebble CEO publically unveilled the smart watch and we got to play around with the watch enough as you can see in the gallery below. The ePaper smart watch was a runaway Kickstarter success in 2012, with over $10 million in pledges from 85,000 backers across the world. The watch missed multiple shipping dates due to delays in production, resulting in furore from the backers. Being a backer myself, I heave a sigh of relief to know that Pebble will be shipping soon. Having seen and held the watch from close quarters, I feel more than happy to have waited this long! Eric Migicovsky confirmed that Pebble will be shipped in the order they received pledges from Kickstarter backers. He also unveiled the packaging for Pebble, which looks gorgeous and meticulously planne

Hands-off Demo With Ubuntu Phone at CES 2013

Image
Probably as we speak, at CES, Canonical officials are in intense talks with OEMs and carriers from all over the world. And I really believe that they will manage to see devices with Ubuntu Phone inside. It might start with countries from the developing world, but to be fair,   At CES 2013 , we managed to find the Canonical booth where Ubuntu Phone , the latest mobile OS, was being presented. The guys at Canonical were very knowledgeable and presented us with a detailed demo of Ubuntu Phone OS , but didn’t let us play with it. It has enough appealing features that we have recently discussed. And probably it’s just about time that the iOS-Android lead would be seriously challenged. We all know there are improvements that could be done to these two, so if Google and Apple won’t provide almost perfect mobile operating system, it will always be room for others . Ubuntu Mobile or Ubuntu for Phone bets on the fact that users want a gesture-controlled operating system. This n

DailyApp: PIP Camera (iPhone and Android): Picture in Picture Magic!

Image
There was a time when cropping a photograph was considered the height of image editing on a handset. Then along came Instagram with its array of filters and suddenly everyone was editing every other picture they took by just a touch here and a tap there. Mind you, it DID begin to get monotonous after a while as similar apps came into play, all essentially doing the same thing, and differing only in the number of filters and effects offered. Which is why we love PIP Camera . For while it does continue Instagram’s tradition of letting you add effects to your images with minimum technological and financial (yup, it’s free) fuss, it also goes beyond the “shoot-it-filter-it-share-it” mania that has gripped most of the image tweaking apps out there. And it does so by adding a picture in picture effect to your images – the PIP stands for pic-in-pic, for all ye into abbreviations. The app is a 30.2 MB download, and once installed lets you place your photographs (eithe

The Future of Wi-Fi: Incredible Speeds Ahead

Image
Wireless technology has come a long way in the last few years, and this is due to the adoption that mobile devices have received and to the increasing demand of consumers for faster and more reliable wireless connections. Today’s wireless standards, although pretty fast, are not even near to multigigabit speeds . At CES 2013, a presentation by Wilocity showed us the future of Wi-Fi, where these speeds are possible and wireless streaming of big files will be done in the blink of an eye. The new standard will be widely available in the following year, which means that by this time, next year, anyone will be able to transfer files with speeds up to 7 Gbps wirelessly. Tri-band Wi-Fi presented by Wilocity and Qualcomm The tri-band technology represents the result from combining the 802.11ac standard with the new 802.11ad standard that uses the 60 GHz spectrum. The resulting chip is based on the Qualcomm VIVE chip, but gives users the possibility to use all of three existi
