ASUS MeMO Pad Launched at $149, Challenges “Brother” Nexus 7

In a move that many would consider weird, Asus has launched the MeMO Pad, a tablet that obviously gets launched to throw a challenge at the bigger brother, Nexus 7. I also find it weird that Asus didn’t announce this at CES 2013, when obviously, they would have gotten a much bigger promotion. But still, it remains a curious device and it will definitely manage to raise some eyebrows.
It’s even weirder that Asus launches a cheaper tablet than another one that’s made also by them. So, they’re challenging their own, product, one could say. And I think that if Asus would’ve included this slate amongst their CES products, it would’ve been much, much better, because it comes with a very appealing offer – $149 price.

7 inch ASUS MeMO Pad comes at a great price

Obviously, for $150, you won’t get the same specs as Nexus 7, but it’s still great that you can pay such a small amount and get a device from such a respected name as Asus. I mean, I’d be afraid to pay $150 for a no-name brand and get nothing in return. Probably Asus sensed that they could come up with a device to cover the entry-level market – hence, the launch of this baby.
The MeMO Pad comes with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and will be available in three colors: sugar White, titanium Gray and cherry pink (for ladies, I assume). Here are the specs of the latest tablet from Asus:
  • 1GHz VIA WM8950 CPU
  • Mali-400 GPU
  • 10-point multi-touch LED-backlit display
  • 1024 x 600 resolution
  • 140-degree wide viewing angles
  • 350-nit brightness means images
  • ASUS SonicMaster audio a
  • MaxxAudio for high-quality sound.
  • 16GB of internal storage, up to 32GB via the microSD card slot
  • Suite of ASUS applications: SuperNote Lite, BuddyBuzz, ASUS WebStorage with 5GB of online storage space, ASUS Studio and WebStorage Office for enhanced productivity.
  • 1 GB of RAM
  • 1 MP front camera
  • Microphone, micro-USB, G-sensor, 3.5 mm headphone
  • 13.1oz, 370 g
To be honest, I am quite surprised by this little fellow. We have 16 GB of storage + 5GB – this makes it for 21 free GB. Also, the audio technology looks pretty promising, so it should definitely make songs and movies much more pleasant. The MeMO Pad will be available already from this January and with a battery life of up to 7 hours. Hey, this looks really, really interesting! Obviously, Nexus 7 has a better processor, resolution, battery life and other things, but if you’re looking to save some extra bucks, this really looks appealing!

Competition is around the corner

Most of us wanted to own a tablet at one point because these devices have some big advantages over smartphones, in the sense that they are much better suited for video playback, web surfing or gaming. This is mainly due to their bigger screens that have high resolutions and can sow much more content at a time.

One problem with tablets is their price, and until recently, a good tablet with some decent specs was about $200 (and of course, much higher). For those who didn’t afford to buy such a device, the choice was limited to low end models with low resolution screens, lazy processors and a very low amount of RAM. The MeMO Pad will have to face a few competitors, even in this entry-level area:
  • Polaroid M7
  • Vivitar XO
  • Archos Titanium 70
