YoTa Phone is a Smartphone with an eInk Back Screen
YoTa, a rather unknown company when it comes to smartphones, has just
launched a device that blends the high functionality of an advance
phone with the delights of a classic eBook reader screen. The hybrid, as
we like to call the YoTa Phone, has two panels mounted back-to-back and can be used as a dual-sided device.
The interesting concept embedded here by YoTa may be considered at least bold, but as developers describe, the presence of another panel will not affect the battery life, at least in a sensible way. In this manner, some people may well renounce at buying an additional device for reading books, news or other material of the same family.
Reading on a smartphone can be very annoying sometimes, especially in darker environments, where all that white light “attacking” the retina (even at lowest of brightness). Those kind of disadvantages may as well be forgotten, thanks to the concept introduced here by YoTa.
The YoTa Phone has a 4.3-inch wide LCD display on the primary side, which can be used in daily tasks like playing games, watching movies, downloading applications, writing text messages and so on. Once you flip the toy, a beautiful E-ink display awaits users with always-updating stories, notifications, social media updates and even more.
Because
the E-ink technology requires little power to run, the secondary
display is kept always on – a double-edge sword which may not be seen as
an advantage for some, because of security impediments
(you wouldn’t like someone to read your Facebook updates while on the
tube, right?)
Another interesting aspect of this device, and possibly all that might come afterwards, is application developing. Someone may really wish to monetize the advantage of having two displays at hand, like it should have been done with Kyocera Echo.
The YoTa Phone is expected to land somewhere in 2013, manufacturers advising that more details will be made public in Barcelona, at MWC 2013 (where we will be going). Apparently, according to Eldar Murtazin, YoTa Phone will have another very appealing feature – 3D Gorilla Glass which will be unveiled at CES 2013. I was recently considering the possibility of purchasing the classic version of a Kindle, to use it to suppress my book-reading passion. Although other, more advanced devices can take this role, I was opting for the first Kindle because of its e-ink display and the low-light environment that introduces users in.
